1.1. Why did they attain greatness?
Whether they admit it or not, everybody would like to be great at what they do. I never met anyone who intentionally wanted to have a mediocre life. Regardless, the vast majority of people in every community struggle and are unable to reach their full potential. It is unfortunate. Billions of people pass through this universe without ever scratching their potential, without manifesting their highest self.
Most people don’t recognize that they are greatness material, and as a result, they don’t attempt to claim their birthright of greatness. Sadly, only a few became the best version of themselves while alive in this universe. These very few manifested their highest self during their lifetime. They did it even if they were in the same condition and faced the same challenges as everybody else in their communities. The bugging question then is, regardless of all odds, why did they succeed while most in their respective communities failed? Though the great ones were from diverse cultures, different generations, and industries, these few individuals had some commonalities their contemporaries didn’t, which empowered them to unleash their greatness. They had:
· A positive attitude
· Obsession with their cause
· Vision and clarity
· Curiosity and were life-long learners
· Disgust toward conformity
· Courage to leave their comfort zone
· Principles and non-negotiables
· Audacity to take bold actions
· Strong will to try and, if necessary, fail
· Resilience to keep going regardless of setbacks
· Appetite to take risks, make profound changes, and so on.
Which of these do you already have? Among the ones you already have, which ones need further improvement? What should you be doing to develop those you don’t have yet?
1.2. How did they do it?
The next follow-up question is how these few pursued their passion and ultimately attained greatness while the majority stumbled and fell short of becoming their best version? What approaches others weren’t aware of, but the great ones did follow that distinguished them among the crowd?
Although the great ones you and I admire took different routes to reach their individual destinies, they all used a common roadmap and followed the same grand path. The good news is that, in this book, I’ll:
· Reveal the common roadmap they used that guided them on their journey to unleash their highest self,
· Codify the simple four stages the great ones passed through to unchain their greatness to the fullest,
· Show you some of the measures they took during each stage, and
· Share some lessons, in each phase, based on the stories of those who attained greatness before us.
2. To unveil a roadmap used by the great ones
After spending over two decades studying the great ones and true greatness, I recognized that everyone is greatness material. Greatness is the birthright of everyone regardless of one’s race, ethnicity, gender, age, education, social status, or background. All of us are candidates to become world-class in what we do and ultimately attain greatness in our own unique ways.
Unfortunately, only a few in every generation and community unchained their greatness. These few from diverse cultures, generations, and industries are the ones tapped into their full potential. They got fulfilled in life regardless of many challenges and against all odds.
On the contrary, most people fail to attain any level of greatness at all. Below are some of the reasons shared by the majority. They never:
1. Took enough time to recognize their identity and who they truly are.
2. Recognized the unlimited potential they carried within.
3. Thought it was possible to become their highest self.
4. Identified themselves with the great ones. They thought the latter was special, but they weren’t. They placed the great ones on pedestals.
5. Knew that achieving greatness is doable and predictable.
6. Assumed that becoming their best version wasn’t rocket science.
7. Discovered the battle-tested roadmap that would have guided them on the road toward manifesting the best version of themselves.
I was there. I relate to these precious people. I was shocked when I learned the truths about human potential for the first time. That is why I decided to write books on greatness. In these books, my goal is to expose people to the truth. I vowed to open their eyes and see that they’re candidates to live life on their own terms. I decided to convince them that they could unchain their highest self before they phase out from this universe. In these books, I also simplify the process of becoming one’s best and share stories, frameworks, approaches, and strategies anyone can use to unchain their greatness.
My first book, ‘The Highest Level of Greatness,’ was published last year. In that book, I declared that every human being on earth is greatness material regardless of who they are, where they live, and irrespective of their socioeconomic status. I shared the three common traits the great ones from diverse cultures possessed to become the best version of themselves.
I argued that if we desire to attain the highest level of greatness, we should begin this journey by ensuring that we have a solid foundation. The great ones we all adore pursued purpose-oriented, vision-centered, and values-driven greatness. They didn’t go out to chase any kind of greatness. They weren’t also egotistical, selfish, short-sighted, or leading a haphazard life.
These women and men on a mission knew who they were and why they emerged into time and space in that generation. Knowing their purpose gave them meaning in life and laser focus to pick one lane and march forward toward their glorious destiny. They didn’t stop there. From the beginning, they saw the accomplishment of their mission. By tapping into their innate mind eye, they envisioned the fulfillment of their highest self’s assignment. They discovered and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to certain principles and some non-negotiable values based on what mattered the most. Ultimately, they became the best versions of themselves, and you too can do the same.
Once they had the foundation, they marched forward with a plan that guided them on the journey toward their highest selves. In this follow-up book you have on your hands, I’ll share a compass that the great ones used to navigate their journey to greatness. The great ones used a common blueprint regardless of their unique passion and destiny. They all followed the same path to emancipate their greatness from within. Their footsteps are summarized and codified into four simple stages in the Unchain Your Greatness model.
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You can just use the same roadmap the great ones used with some customization. As far as you follow this path they trekked upon, you have a fair chance to attain greatness in your own unique way during your lifetime. You will unchain your greatness to the fullest before you phase out from this planet.
Wherever you may be in life right now, all you have to do is take that first step and start your ride toward the path of greatness unique to you. The best part is that you won’t have to do it blindly. I wrote this book to unveil a roadmap these few great individuals used to transform their lives from underdog to topdog, from obscurity to greatness in the area of their passion. The roadmap will empower you to tap into the hidden potential you already have inside you!
3. To further inspire, challenge, and guide
In the first book, I inspired and challenged- especially underdogs, to seek the highest level of greatness and offered a framework. In this follow-up book, I’m now giving them a roadmap. Yet, I felt that these aren’t enough. I don’t want to leave those who got these two resources alone on this lonely journey toward manifesting one’s highest self. I decided to be their cheerleader to continue inspiring, challenging, and guiding them throughout this rewarding journey. Until they unchain their greatness to the fullest, I’ll continue to empower them by writing more books as they advance on the spectrum of greatness, and this being the second in a series of books on greatness.
In this book, I will:
· Inspire you by sharing stories of the greatest heroes and heroines hailed from diverse backgrounds, industries, generations, and cultures. I’m sure you will resonate with some of these fascinating transformational stories of underdogs to greats.
· Give you life-changing advice to unchain your greatness. If you apply them, your life will never be the same again.
· Show you the four simple and straightforward stages you need to pass until you manifest your highest self to the fullest. I’ll give you in-depth explanations and measures you can take to set yourself apart from the rest and ultimately unchain your greatness.
By the way, I’m not naïve. I know greatness is a bone of contention. It means different things to different people. Besides, my readers could be very diverse. Some of my readers may:
· Not yet believe that they can be great. They may have so many seemingly justifiable reasons, at least for them, why they’re not greatness material.
· Believe that they’re greatness material, but they never took the first major step toward manifesting their best version of themselves.
· Not only believed but also have begun the journey.
· Be successful professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders in their own right. Some of them might have already advanced on the spectrum of greatness.
In whichever category you may fall, this is my hope that you will find something from this book that will empower you to go to the next stage. If you ask me, the most challenging part of this rewarding once-in-a-lifetime journey is believing that you can and deserve it. If you pass that hurdle, the rest is just a matter of time.
That was the most subtle and stubborn challenge in the early stage of my journey in my own life. I had never believed that I amounted to more than just getting by. I never saw anyone from my family and village who manifested their highest self. It never crossed my mind that I deserve to be the first one from my family and village to become the best version of myself. Nevertheless, everything changed when I encountered a glimpse of human potential.
Amid poverty, despair, ignorance, and lack, I realized that all of us, regardless of who we are and on which side of the fence we were born, are destined to be great in our own unique ways. In the previous book, I shared how, for the first time, reading the story of Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) in the early 90s caused a turning point in my life. I never knew a black man like myself ever had a global impact. Of course, later, I read many stories of black men and women and other minorities from other cultures too.
As a young man in one of the poorest villages in Ethiopia without exposure to the world, I thought my fate was sealed. Subconsciously, I was persuaded that I’d end up like everybody in my family and village. It never occurred to me that unlimited potential is packed within, and it is up to me to unchain it. Reading the biography of MLK was the beginning of this rewarding journey. It opened my eyes to see a glimpse of human potential. I began developing possibility thinking. That is what I’m trying to do in this book. To give you hope and challenge you to think big.
Yes, I’m not yet done. I’m still a student of greatness. Regardless, I didn’t want to keep what I’ve learned since the early 90s to myself alone. The insights I gained shocked me, and I couldn’t withhold them for long. When I reviewed the stories of many great ones from diverse cultures, generations, and industries, I could see that they were like us before they began their greatness journey. They had the same fear, inadequacy, doubt, uncertainty, challenges, setbacks, and disappointments. Since then, I have proclaimed to anyone who is willing to listen that we all are great material irrespective of our ethnicity, race, age, or gender. We all meant to unchain the greatness leashed within each of us. We should never settle for less than manifesting our highest self. I’ll continue to write to inspire, especially underdogs who have been conditioned and cultured to lower their bar and think that they cannot manifest their highest self.
In this book, if you haven’t yet, I implore you to join me in believing that achieving greatness is your birthright. The great ones you admire were where you’re today before they began their rewarding journey of greatness. It is now your turn to begin this worthwhile expedition. You weren’t supposed to stay mediocre and average. You meant to serve the world around you with world-class excellence, give your best, die empty, leaving an enduring legacy that outlives you. And this book provides you with a roadmap that guides you as you step into your greatness and navigate toward your greatest version.
I understand that attaining true greatness is a protracted and twisted journey. Having a blueprint alone isn’t enough to unchain your greatness. It requires you not just to read this one book. You need to continually grow by reading more books, reflecting, acting, and learning from your experiences constantly until you finish your journey and unchain your greatness to the fullest.
In this regard, I’ll continue writing more books and providing additional services to empower you and the people around you as you advance on the greatness spectrum until you attain your glorious destiny.
I was where you might be right now, even worst
In the meantime, I want you to know that I was where you’re today before uncovering the truths that I’m about to share in this book.
I was born in one of the poorest villages in Ethiopia. No one from my family went to college. If it weren’t for the discoveries you would find in this book, I’d have been still poor, and you wouldn’t have heard of me, let alone read my book.
Besides, I’d have given up a long time ago when I was experiencing defeats and setbacks on the way. I’d have slowed down when many doubted and put so many ugly labels on me with the hope of deterring me from talking about greatness. I refused to stop or slow down. I’ve come a long way because of the discoveries I will share with you in this book.
Certainly, I’m not yet done. I’m not close to where I should be. Even if I’ve not yet scratched the surface of my potential, it is short of a miracle for a guy born in one of the remote parts of the world to be where I’m today.
If a guy like me could come this far, anyone can!
I’m not here bragging by sharing my accomplishments. I’m doing it for your and many other underdogs' benefit. The motive is to show you the power of what I’m about to share with you in this book and how, if you apply it, it can also change your life forever, transforming you from underdog to great in the area of your passion.
As soon as I realized that I’ve not yet scratched my potential and there was a fair chance I could achieve success and add value to other people and my community, I ventured out. The first action I took was helping form a youth association and becoming the leader of my peers to serve our community. I enrolled at the largest university in my country and became the students' union president against all odds. Many media covered my speeches and interviewed me. I remember getting holiday greeting cards from some Ministers. I was given verbal and written compliments from top leaders of the ruling and opposition parties, including the then Prime Minister.
After graduation, in the early 2000s, I was also a Central Committee member of one of Ethiopia's vibrant opposition political parties. I led its research department until I left for the US in 2005. I was a researcher working for an international research institute for five years before coming to the US in 2005. The opportunity allowed me to work with world-class scientists worldwide from 2000 until I left for the US in 2005.
I came to the US, did my master's in Computer Science, and got a wonderful opportunity to work for a multinational corporation as a software engineer. I was also a subcontractor working for national training companies traveling across the US. I’ve got a doctoral degree in strategic leadership. I’ve been writing blogs and articles since 2008 and published my first book in 2011. Since then, I have already published four books, and now you have in your hands the fifth one.
Since 2007, 2 years after I came to the US, I’ve been a coach, consultant, and trainer empowering leaders in world-class organizations in the US and overseas. I’m humbled to come this far on this journey- a journey I’m asking you to join me.
Mind you. If an underdog guy like me from one of the poorest villages in the Horn of Africa could come this far, anyone can do it. You could even outstrip what I’ve done so far. That is my goal of sharing with you everything I know.
Please read this book in its entirety and apply what you learn right away. The book gives you the pathway the great ones uncovered. It’s your compass as you walk on the continuum of greatness. You can follow these straightforward steps the great ones took so that you too could join these few elites by:
· Exploring to discover what predisposes you to become great. Greatness begins with curiosity. No one ever discovered great things without an undying curiosity. The curiosity to know the truth about who you truly are, your source, purpose in life, and what makes you greatness material deserves exploring.
· Enacting based on your discoveries to step into your greatness. True discoveries generate faith. Faith produces conviction forcing you to act on your discoveries boldly. You can’t help it except to make a quantum leap.
· Enduring through continual setbacks till the end. Quantum actions deliver quantum results. With undeniable results comes fierce resistance. If you’re committed to the truths you discovered, you don’t have any choice except to develop resilience and stay faithful in good and bad times. You gracefully handle challenges, setbacks, failures, defeats, and rejections while working on your comeback power to finish the race.
· Emancipating your greatness to the fullest. The rewarding journey you began with curiosity, developing faith and conviction, backing it by perpetual commitment, needs your unwavering loyalty. Seeing through the truths that you discovered during your exploration demands continual devotion by going the extra mile beyond the finish line to build institutions, raise successors, die empty, and leave an enduring legacy that outlives you.
Rejecting a message without scrutinizing it
When I published the first book on greatness at the end of 2017, I expected lots of buzz and excitement, at least from underdogs around me. I was wrong. Deaf silence!
Out of curiosity, I reached out to some of my book readers’ to know their take on the new book. Many told me they didn’t get time to read the entire book. I didn’t buy the reason, though. How come all the readers of my previous books got busy simultaneously? There must be something they’re not telling me. I then decided to further push some of them with the hope of squeezing out the very reason why they’re not reading the book. Fortunately, a few dared to tell me the uncomfortable truth. What they shared can be summarized in one statement: they didn’t resonate with the message.
I didn’t take this generic feedback at its face value. I probed further by asking follow-up questions. The revelation stunned me. Though I thought the greatness message was appealing and presented it so that anyone from anywhere would find it palatable, I didn’t achieve my goal. It didn’t click, at least for those people I talked to! Let alone invoke excitement or touch nerves; they didn’t even read the book beyond a few pages. The book’s promises in the first couple of pages weren’t appealing to them. They thought I was out of touch and living in a bubble. One of the readers lamented, “While we’re trying to survive and make ends meet, you talk about becoming great. I’ve got many problems and immediate needs I’ve to take care of. I may come back in the future when I get a breathing room to read the rest of the book.”
Though they used different words to express their disinterest, they all agreed that the message was irrelevant to the state where they were in life. One person complained, “Assegid, this book may excite other people who aren’t in the same situation I’m in. You wrote this book for a different audience. People like me, we are trying to survive.” These few conversations were very revelatory.
I felt bad momentarily. Nonetheless, I immediately recognized what was happening. The problem wasn’t the message nor the people who read the book per se. The culprit was the culture that conditioned them from childhood that they meant just to survive. I know the power of culture and how most inhabitants of a given culture are blindly loyal to it without even knowing it. It is so powerful that it sits in the driver’s seat of one’s mind and drives the person's aspiration, attitude, behavior, decisions, and actions. Knowing the controlling power of culture (subculture and family psyche), I didn’t judge them. I sympathized.
They dismissed the message without even fully understanding it. They didn’t bother to check it out, let alone dig deeper and do their homework. Without researching and investigating to see if what I was talking about in the book gave any sense, they deemed it unworthy of their time and attention. That is what happens when someone is conditioned. This thing happens, most of the time, at the subconscious level. You reject anything that doesn’t align with what you have repeatedly told. That was what happened with those readers I chatted with. They lowered their bar and accepted that they meant to prioritize survival. Unconsciously, they admitted that they were unworthy of greatness and found my book irrelevant and out of touch.
Many are victims of their own cultures
By the way, this wasn’t new to me. More than two decades ago, back when I was still in my hometown, Harar- in the Eastern part of Ethiopia, I tasted the brutal tyranny of culture. When I began sharing the lessons I learned from the great ones and encouraged people around me to aim high and become their best selves, most rejected the message immediately. They dismissed it without even hearing me out and asking any questions. More than the words they used to dismiss the message, their accusatory tone in their facial expressions and non-verbal were harsh. They didn’t say it verbally.
But, I could read from their look and demeanor asking, “He is one of us. Why does he talk about greatness? Doesn’t he know who he is and who we’re? We’re poor. We are meant to survive one day at a time. Talking about an aloof concept like this doesn’t satisfy my hunger and quench my thirst!”
Who blames them? First, they never heard anyone who looked like them (me) talk about success and greatness. All the influencers in our village and town never talked about becoming your highest self! Second, nothing in me and around me sounds and feels great, so they were questioning why I was advocating something I hadn’t yet experienced in my own life. Third, while we were all struggling to survive and living life one day at a time, they couldn’t comprehend why I was wasting my time and, most importantly, theirs by talking about ‘nonsense.’
Some were even unfriendly, while a few went too far. The latter did cut ties with me. They also tried to isolate me from everybody else. Some of them badmouthed me and did many ugly things I don’t want to mention here. I resented and wondered why people so close to me went that far to hurt me. I was asking myself, “Why are they so mad? I didn’t do anything bad or ask them to do anything harmful. I was just sharing what I learned, which is what relatives and friends do. I cared and didn’t want them to miss the life-transforming insights and stories I was exposed to. I was doing a favor here!”
To be sure, that was then. Looking back, that was a blessing in disguise. If I had stayed in the same counterproductive relationships for a while, slowly but surely, I’d have returned to the norm, and you wouldn’t have heard of me at all. I forgave them a long time ago. They didn’t know better. They were cultured and conditioned to think, behave, and act the way they did. No hard feelings.
For your information, I met some of those who had rejected the message a few decades ago in the US and when I went back home for vacations. I even talked with a few about the good old days and our arguments. We had fun! None of them treated me the way they did back then. They could see in their own eyes the message paid off. They could see how far I’d come. Many of them confessed that they couldn’t believe I was the same guy in that village a few decades ago. Some attributed the transformation to luck. It wasn’t luck!
That said, I didn’t expect the same pushback I had more than two decades ago in the US following my first on greatness, which was published at the end of 2017. In the US, one of the richest countries in the world, I didn’t expect people to lower their bar that low and pushback against this message. If someone who lives in the US, the land of opportunity, struggles to have a possibility thinking, where else on earth can the person believes that there is a chance for them to succeed if they pay their dues?
The message works for everyone
Don’t misunderstand me here. My message works for anyone from anywhere. Look how far I’ve come from one of the poorest villages in Ethiopia!
Truth doesn’t have favoritism. It doesn’t change with location, altitude, or distance. Anyone, from anywhere, can become great if they:
· Develop an ‘I can, and I deserve’ mentality by dropping some disempowering beliefs and incorporating a few empowering ones,
· Take quantum actions based on those empowering beliefs,
· Build high-performance habits,
· Learn to grow continually,
· Become resilient and endure till the end, and so on. By the way, this is the prime message of this book. We will talk about this more.
Do you see which race or ethnicity you should belong on the list? There is also no preferred geographic location enlisted. You don't also see anything about which Ivy League universities you should attend, your IQ level, what exceptional talent and gifts you should have, and so on. Therefore, please note that I’m just sharing my frustration against people who have relatively better options in the US but fail to tap into the relatively better opportunities they are presented with.
To be sure, I’m not naïve. I know how hard life is and the multitudes of barriers people worldwide face. Earlier, I was just making a comparison.
Compared to many other countries, people who live in the US have a relatively better chance of pursuing their individual passion and achieving greatness. Otherwise, like every other country, the USA isn’t perfect. Minorities and immigrants in the US must make so many additional efforts and go the extra mile to succeed compared to those who are part of the mainstream. However, being part of the US mainstream, such as white and male, doesn’t license someone to be great without paying their dues. On the other hand, though their numbers are few, there are many rugs to riches stories of minorities such as Oprah Winfrey, Mickael Jordan, Jay-Z, and Tyler Perry, to name a few. This shows that people who attain greatness come from all races, ethnicities, genders, and diverse geographic, religious, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
You see! I was sidetracked and wandered off-topic. But I don’t want to undercut my own message because of the disappointment I faced from some people in the US who were exposed to my message. They have better opportunities than others in other parts of the world with limited options. Otherwise, even if their numbers are small, there are great ones in every country and culture, some of whose stories I’ll narrate in this book. They ignored the belittling culturally conditioned voice within. They questioned the disempowering beliefs of their native culture (subculture and/or family psyche). By stopping to live for survival, they vowed to excel and manifest their highest selves by recognizing their unique purposes, tapping into their unlimited potential, and unchaining the best version of themselves.
We don’t have any excuse for not discovering who we’re, knowing our passion, the reason for existence, envisioning, and showing commitment to pursue our purpose until we tap into our unlimited potential and ultimately manifest our highest selves. These few great ones in every culture and nation overcame the same challenges their contemporaries encountered, but that didn’t stop them from becoming the best version of themselves.
Let me come back to the point I was trying to make about why many people may reject the greatness message. The elephant in the room is culture. Seeking greatness is taboo in many cultures, subcultures, and families.
Many people are victims of their cultures. Very few national, community, and/or family cultures are empowering their inhabitants to pursue greatness. Most cultures discourage greatness. Instead, they mold their inhabitants to abide by some limiting norms that have existed for centuries. People in these disempowering cultures focus on survival, staying safe, and remaining average like everybody else in that environment.
If you ask the gatekeepers, king and queen makers, and those enforcing the cultural norms, they don’t see it that way. They have some seemingly golden justifications, at least for them, about why individuals should scarify their individual identities and be like everyone else. They don’t realize that it is possible to take care of one another, defend the common interest, execute the shared goals, and work together for the greater good without molding everyone to think, believe, behave, and act the same. It's unfair to tone down the individual's aspiration and make everyone focus on survival. It is a disservice not only to the individual but also to the greater good.
A given team, organization, and country misses out on the best of everyone when they attempt to create a monotonous citizenry. Without tapping into the full potential of everyone, it is impossible to survive, most importantly, thrive in the 21st C. If you study those individuals, teams, organizations, and communities that experienced quantum leap and became great, they first changed their habits (individuals) and culture (how things are done within that team, organization, or society). There is no shortcut!
Let me stop talking about culture here. If you’re interested, I’m working on two books. In the first book, I will give some background info about the power of culture and how it is impossible, whether individually or corporately, to experience true and lasting transformation without reforming the underlining culture. I’ll also show you how to create a unique culture for a competitive edge. I’ll dive deep into the second book and show you how to transform your existing culture. Visit our Books page www.successpws.com/books once in a while to purchase the books when they become available, or go to the bottom of our home page www.successpws.com and sign up for our free newsletter so that you will be alerted when the book is published and to take advantage of promotional offers.
Many are victimized by their brain wiring
You may not relate to my frustration with disempowering cultures. You may live in a culture that fosters the kind of message I’m promoting in my greatness books. Or, regardless of a disempowering national culture, you may live in a subculture and/or family culture (family psyche) that encourages members to become their highest self. Or you used to live and operate in a limiting culture, but you freed yourself from the limiting beliefs of that culture. In the latter case, congratulations! I applaud you first for opening your eyes to see the drawbacks of your culture. Second, for taking a risk and courageously refusing to show blind loyalty to certain aspects of your culture that stop you from becoming your highest self.
Very few dare to examine their respective culture. Most people are blindly loyal and never question it. Even if you point out to them the damning effects of the culture and how that affects individuals and the entire community, it doesn’t matter. They will persecute you. They don’t even listen to you. They may even solicit others' support to gang up on you!
Even if you are free and don’t need it, just bear with me to help many of my readers who may still struggle to embrace the greatness message and take it seriously. Reading this part, however, may help you deal with if some disempowering and faulty beliefs create discomfort at a subconscious level.
By the way, I can’t help people who oppose the message and never read my books. I’m trying here in this section to help those who picked the book but are unable to get inspired, continue to turn pages, and ultimately take action to translate their learning into tangible results. If somebody picks a book on its title that contains GREATNESS, this person would like to be world-class in what they do at a conscious level. They’ve got the intention to unchain their greatness. Unfortunately, deep inside and subconsciously, some might harbor a few disempowering beliefs. In the background, the latter might make them believe they are unworthy of becoming great. These faulty beliefs operate subtly, and not that easy to spot their dissenting inner voices.
If there is any doubt, consciously or unconsciously, about whether someone is worthy of greatness, it is unlikely that this person would take the path I’m putting forward in this book. Even if they do, they may not take it to the end until they unchain their greatness to the fullest. Without their conscious awareness, they resist going all in. Their brain wiring sabotages their progress. They will find some seemingly justifiable reasons why they cannot go to the next level even if their assessment is inaccurate.
Notice, I’m not here suggesting shortcuts and easy steps. One must go deeper. Manifesting one’s highest self requires defeating any remnant disempowering beliefs that may exist at a subconscious level. I’m here in this section arming you with some counterarguments that will help you tone down or even shut up the critical inner voice that attempts to stop, slow, or resist your advance on the spectrum of greatness. Let me share with you my thought process. It may help you if you’re resisting the message consciously or unconsciously. It may also help you experience a paradigm shift in your thinking, go all in, and begin this rewarding journey. Let me show you what kind of thinking freed me from disempowering beliefs. Let me reveal why I strongly believe you’re meant to be great, and you should go all-in until you unchain your greatness.
Even if you’re not resisting the message, you deserve to know my framework of thinking and what I believe at the early stage of the book. If there is a huge disparity between what you strongly believe and mine, no pressure, stop reading further. Just dump the book in a trash can. No hard feeling. Or give it to someone who may consider reading it.
I should be honest from the get-go. I strongly believe that becoming great is the birthright of anyone born human regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, educational and socioeconomic status. Anyone alive and walking on this planet should attempt to become their best version before they phase out from it. Seeking greatness should be encouraged, incentivized, and promoted in every culture, subculture, and family. In all cultures, attaining greatness in one’s unique way should be the norm, not a rarity.
I’m convinced that every one of us is prone to be great in our unique way during our lifetime because:
1. Our greatness isn’t rooted in our bodies
2. Becoming your best version doesn’t require having a superior mind
3. Your highest self, which transcends time and space, is the source of your greatness
Let me explain.
1. Our greatness isn’t rooted in our bodies
First of all, let me address the elephant in the room. I don’t believe that our physical body is the source of our greatness. Many people may immediately assume that I’m talking about the body when I talk about humanity's greatness. This is partly because of our cultures. Many cultures associate greatness with certain in-born traits, external looks, and body statures. If you’re a minority, you may immediately withdraw and discount yourself as a potential candidate to be great in that culture. You know well that you don’t qualify the cultural expectations; thus, why listen to me in the first place and try to become great?!
Even if you are among those in the mainstream of a given culture, you may discount yourself if you don’t have special physical gifts and talent. You may downplay your worth if you don’t have a perfectly healthy and good-looking body with vigor. The reality is that very few have such a body. It doesn't last even for those who got lucky with a great body. It ages and loses its beauty and vigor. Thus, if somebody thinks I’m talking about greatness based on one’s physical attributes, they immediately disregard my message. As a result, they don’t have hope of becoming great; therefore, they take the sidelines.
The fact of the matter is that every human being commences its journey in this universe as a microscopic cell in a womb. This tiny DNA evolves into a complex creature consisting of over a hundred trillion autonomous, interdependent, and intelligent cells communicating and working together as one well-functioning entity. Our body is a walking miracle!
It may take us an eternity to fully understand what each part of our body is made of and how exactly it functions. For instance, we barely comprehend how one of our tiny organs- the eye, operates. Regardless of its sophistication and beauty, humanity doesn’t have any competitive advantage that emanates from our bodies. Some animals are more agile than us. They can easily outperform and outrun (fly/swim) us. There are also stronger and more dangerous animals that can easily eat us alive.
Thus, our greatness isn’t rooted in our bodies. The greatness I’m inspiring you to pursue transcends the physical body. We have so many great ones with so many physical disadvantages. They unleashed their greatness regardless of so many physical challenges.
The greatness I’m talking about also has nothing to do with feeding our egos. Ego is closely tied with our physical body, bloodline, and history. It is preoccupied with survival. It is shortsighted and looks for shortcuts. As I discussed in The Highest Level of Greatness book, such greatness is unsustainable and unfulfilling even if one achieves it. We have seen many once great in sports and beauty contests losing it as they age or their influence declines. Such temporary greatness is the lowest level in the book, and I’m not promoting such lowly greatness here.
2. Becoming your best version doesn’t require having a superior mind
Another stumbling block for many is their mental status. They assume that greatness takes having a superior mind. This is also because of our faulty education systems. They measure their worth based on their brain power. They may feel insecure and inadequate if they’re uneducated, from low-income families, live in inner cities, and drop out without proper education. Taking upon themselves, they compare their mental faculties with other people around them. When they realize they don’t have a high IQ, they immediately think they’re not made to be great.
Interestingly, many great ones who succeeded in the past and even now have been labeled ineducable. Many of them were dropouts finding the education system unproductive to become the best version of themselves. Thus, I don’t believe we have any competitive advantage if we only depend on our intelligence.
Not so fast. I’m not undermining our minds. Our body is important for our survival and to fulfill our assignments. It helps us, our highest self from within, stay ‘legal’ in the physical universe by obeying the physical laws, navigating through the terrain, and protecting us from the harsh elements in the outer world. Likewise, our mind is also critical for us to transcend into the metaphysical universe, which sustains the physical universe.
In the first book, I encouraged my readers to tap into their minds and envision the accomplishment of their purpose. Many great inventors, some of which I mentioned in the previous book and now in this book, tapped into the quantum universe to bring forth what hadn’t existed in the physical. They invented many discoveries that advanced our civilization because they employed their minds and operated in the metaphysical universe filled with limitless potential and provisions.
That is to say, our mind gives us a little bit of competitive advantage compared to other animals. Again, I’m not talking about IQ here. Every human being begins with a blank mind as a baby, like other babies of animals. But, that empty brain accumulates vast knowledge, processes, and analyzes complex information as the baby grows and taps into the mind and the quantum universe.
Endowed with the frontal cortex and extra neurons per unit, we humans excel in thinking, creating, and innovating more than any other animal on earth. These unique physical features of our brain are the tip of the iceberg. They are physical portals necessary to connect us with the metaphysical universe that other animals don’t have access to the way we’ve. Our mind utilizes laws and principles in the quantum universe to give us an extraordinary edge in this physical universe where we’re underdogs physically.
Because of our minds (which we haven’t yet scratched below the surface), we are the most intelligent beings experiencing quantum leaps in the physical universe. But we shouldn’t forget that though we had the hardware (brain) and the software (mind) installed in our skulls when we joined this universe, we were in caves and laboring for centuries, competing with other animals and fighting with mother nature for survival. Thanks to our ancestors' progress in evolving mentally, we left the caves. We have advanced our civilization by living a comfortable life our ancestors never dreamed possible. What is more, as we continue evolving mentally, we’re aiming to colonize other planets. Still, our true greatness isn’t because we have a superior mind.
If we confine ourselves in the quantum universe alone, we can’t fully tap into our human potential to the fullest. When you review history, most great ones went beyond their mind. From reading their biographies, most of them went beyond the physical and metaphysical universes. You, too, can do the same! You have what it takes. It doesn’t cost you anything you cannot afford. Built-in, you’ve what it takes to navigate in the metaphysical universe.
3. Your highest self is the source of your greatness
If our bodies and minds aren’t the sources of our true greatness, you may ask, what else is there?
We may have different religious backgrounds. We may have some differing spiritual beliefs. However, I hope we may agree that humans are conscious beings able to transcend space and time. I’m among believers from diverse religious backgrounds who believe that we’re primarily souls that think and live in bodies. I firmly believe that our eternal soul emerged from eternity into time and space in this generation to accomplish assignments unique to her.
The soul being spirit cannot survive in the physical universe. Let alone operate to fulfill her assignment on this planet hostile to spirits. She needs a body that obeys the physical laws and a mind that understands and uses the principles and formulas in the metaphysical universe to overcome physical challenges, solve problems, create, and innovate. Unfortunately, many people lose sight of the real deal within. They consider the bio-suit or the thoughts and imaginations in their minds as the main things forgetting these resources are just meant to serve the soul- one’s highest self.
It is sad to witness many people primarily serving the body and the ego's interest, sacrificing the needs and assignment of their soul. No wonder why the great ones became extraordinary as they primarily served their souls' assignments. They were selfless and visionaries. On the other hand, the majority in their respective generations remained ordinary and average. Conscious or not, they were preoccupied with attending to their temporal bodies' needs and pursued the ego's selfish agendas.
The soul gives every human being a unique fate. Unlike humanity, every other creature has a fixed destiny. They have foreseeable futures, from microscopic beings to grander creations like the sun. Every creation has built-in intelligence. The latter operates in the metaphysical. The intelligence within each creation, including those we consider non-living, dictates how they perform their functions in the physical universe by following the physical laws. Even if animals are more intelligent than plants, they have been only making slow and insignificant evolution in the physical and mental realms that have been almost the same for centuries. These evolutions only helped them to adapt to the ever-changing physical universe. Those who failed to evolve went extinct. They could not reengineer their genes, rewire their brains, and inherit whatever they learned to the next generation. They were doomed!
Humanity has evolved faster and transmitted evolutionary data to future generations through genes and cultures. We evolved in our minds in the metaphysical universe so much that we have easily ruled and governed nature and other creations in the physical universe. Sadly, our spiritual evolution is so slow that humanity isn’t yet where it is supposed to be. We are still primitive compared to where we would have been if we evolved enough spiritually the way we’ve been evolving mentally. But I’ve faith in this and coming generations. I hope many in this generation will push some boundaries and further tap into our unlimited mental and spiritual potential by continuing to evolve mentally and spiritually so that the human race may experience a quantum leap jump and evolve to the next level of civilization.
A quick note. Though humanity has been tapping into the metaphysical via our minds, schools don’t want to acknowledge this. Most schools apply material science and believe that there is only matter, which can be perceived by our sense organs, neglecting the mind. Only self-help books and some unconventional schools outside the mainstream school system entertain concepts such as the existence of the mind.
Nonetheless, most self-help books focus mainly on how to master using our minds to achieve success. Very few touched on the importance of tapping into our spiritual side. The reason is obvious. We haven’t yet evolved spiritually as we did in our minds. We don’t yet understand many spiritual laws, let alone use them to our advantage. Still, I’m sure that the more we evolve spiritually, the more wisdom we gain. And this is my hope that, in the future, many self-help books will empower us to evolve spiritually and tap into the power of the spiritual universe. For now, just trust me when I say we are greatness material primarily because of our souls. We’re spiritual beings.
The great ones manifested their highest self because they evolved both mentally and, to some extent, spiritually. They realized what Pierre Teilhard de Chardin did: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” Our being spiritual and having human experience predisposes us to be great. We shouldn’t allow cultural and scientific limitations that keep us in the physical and metaphysical universes alone. We should understand that we are limitless. The great ones were evolving mentally and spiritually. That was why they transcended the physical and metaphysical and functioned in the spiritual realm. You, too, can do the same! You were built to function this way. You have what it takes within.
It is unfortunate that the objective reality on the ground paints a totally different picture. Rather than each one of us becoming great in our own unique ways and tapping into our limitless potential, we compete unproductively. I’m not talking about healthy competitions. A competition that is not based on our competitive advantages and uniqueness is unhealthy and counterproductive. Worst, we fight bloody wars like animals. It is unfortunate and beneath who we truly are at our core.
We’re endowed with unlimited potential, not because of our bodies and mental faculties alone. Our mind enables us to transcend matter and the metaphysical to design, create, and bring forth those things that had never existed in the physical. Mind shapes, molds, and overrides matter. All the things we have been creating and innovating came from the unique capabilities of the mind. Everything that hadn’t been part of the original creation process didn’t exist physically until the inventors and innovators saw them in the metaphysical universe using their minds. We don’t need to be inventors or innovators to be great. But, we must see in our mind’s eye the accomplishment of our purpose. We must tap into the limitless metaphysical universe that can fund, support, and sustain our purpose.
What is more? We should also free our souls- our best versions, from within. Without acknowledging and cooperating with our spiritual identity, we cannot unchain our greatness and become our best version. Sadly, many faulty beliefs prevent us from taking this journey, which the great ones took. If we desire to unleash our highest self (the spiritual self), we should first deal with faulty beliefs and incorporate empowering ones.
Faulty beliefs are coming in the way
Regardless of our glorious destiny, it’s saddening to witness many unable to claim their birthright of greatness. Faulty beliefs come in the way of making the vast majority of humanity:
· Think that they are biological accidents,
· Feel that they’re their bodies and thoughts,
· Acknowledge only matter and what they can see, touch, hear, etc.,
· Compare themselves with animals,
· Believe that they are ordinary,
· Consider themselves not worthy of greatness.
Hence, they:
· Live as fugitives than royals,
· Walk as wanderers without a clear purpose,
· Settle for mediocrity,
· And finally, leave the planet unceremoniously.
I couldn’t be silent
By now, you have figured out why I cannot remain silent. I can’t walk away from evangelizing the greatness of humanity. I’m passionate about demystifying faulty beliefs and letting everyone on this planet know that they are:
· Highly favored, more than any other creation,
· Chosen to manifest the greatness of their Creator,
· Predisposed to shine,
· Wired to have an undeniable impact,
· Crowned like royals to be kings/queens on earth,
· Appointed for signs and wonders in this universe,
· Predisposed to become great and leave an indelible mark, the current and future generations will remain appreciative.
I’m glad that you’re still with me on this journey toward unchaining your highest self. Let’s jump in and talk about the Unchain Your Greatness model.
I’ve already addressed why some people I chatted with pushed back against the greatness message without doing their homework. Their culture, the way they are wired, and some faulty and disempowering beliefs they have harbored since childhood might come in the way preventing many from hearing the message. Most people oppose such messages unconsciously. They listen to the small and critical voice within that defends the beliefs and values of their native culture (subculture and/or family psyche).
In this part, I’ll focus on why many people worldwide, even if their culture doesn’t get in the way, are unable to attain greatness. Let me show you what might have prevented them from unchaining their greatness.
I. The majority doesn’t explore at all
The vast majority of humanity doesn’t explore at all. Easily buy into the previous generations' limited explorations with so many restraining boundaries and narrow scope than push new boundaries. The overwhelming majority in a given society follow the same path their ancestors carved out, never questioning even those apparent faulty beliefs that caused them to become and stay underdogs.
They fell short of discovering who they truly are and how far they could go in life; they accept where they’re in life right now- average and ordinary. Without going the necessary distance to uncover their true worth, they settled for less than who they truly are- making greatness material.
Before navigating and discovering why they are here on earth at this time and in this generation, they fall for anything. Due to this, they get easily distracted from the main thing missing the path that leads to their glorious destiny.
Without conceiving a worthy vision, many forfeit too early their golden chance to step into their greatness. They let go of leading a lifestyle based on their true spiritual identity and their soul’s assignment.
Without knowing who they are meant to be at the end of their journey on earth, they quickly close their case and believe they’re not a candidate to be great. They see themselves as unworthy of attaining greatness. Therefore, they never explore.
I didn’t explore for years
Before taking this rewarding journey, while I was still in my hometown, I didn’t explore. I was living life one day at a time, never being curious about who I was and how far I could go in life.
I thought everybody in the world was living like us. At first, I didn’t even know we were poor. I assumed living life with lack and scarcity was normal.
I believed being average and staying ordinary for the rest of my life was my fate. I never probed to find if there could be a better me within. I never questioned whether there was a better path than the one my family had been on for generations.
What is more? I assumed that everything I was told was the truth, never taking the responsibility to find it out myself.
I wasn’t exposed to the greatness within me or the stories of other great ones around the world who look like me, underdogs. As a result, I was in the dark. I didn't venture out to explore, not knowing that I had a shot at becoming who I was meant to be in the area of my passion. I stayed the same for years until one lucky day!
The lucky day that changed me forever
Luckily, in the early 90s, out of nowhere, a teacher in my hometown lent me two books. I never knew these kinds of books existed, let alone to read one.
We had one big library in town. It takes 2 hours to get there by foot. Even then, we didn’t have books like these. Maybe they were there. I didn’t know. I only went there to read textbooks.
One of the books he gave me was the biography of Martin Luther King Jr., “What Manner of a Man.”
Since then, I’ve read tons of personal development books. But none of this would have happened if I hadn't been introduced to the world of self-help books. I’m forever grateful to this individual. He introduced me to the story of MLK, one of the great ones in the entire history of humanity, which later introduced me to my true self.
Knowing the underdog to topdog transformation of MLK changed me forever. Before then, I never knew anyone, who looked like me-black, could have a global impact until I read his extraordinary story. As a young man, it was a turning point. It changed me forever! Of course, later, I was exposed to other stories of the great ones such Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Nelson Mandella, Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, and so on.
I immediately dropped every silly thing I was doing. People around me woke up to a totally different me. My talk, behaviors, and actions changed drastically.
It wasn’t clear to me back then. Exposure to this incredible story of an underdog turned topdog resulted in numerous physiological and mental transformations within. My brain went through rigorous rewiring. Some disempowering neural pathways were overridden and substituted by new and empowering ones. My neurochemistry also changed. With these internal reconfigurations, my attitude and mentality began to change without much conscious awareness on my part. Back then, I didn’t know the science behind it. Later, I learned about neuroplasticity, epigenetics, and so on. Mind you. I was still an underdog on the outside. Nothing around me looked or sounded great right away. Slowly but surely, over the years, most of those disempowering neural pathways in my brain that predisposed me to focus on survival, seek safety, avoid risk, and think too small were overridden. A new mindset emerged. I began to visualize who I would be in the future.
True transformation begins with rewiring your brain. Think about this. We received most of our brain wiring when we were in the womb and during infancy! This head start, however, came with so many unwanted prices. Yes, you can immediately adapt to the outside world as soon as you’re out of the self-sufficient and comfortable womb. Your survival rate increases.
Here is the trick. The wiring while in the womb is based on the neural wiring of your ancestors and parents. You inherit their thinking framework, world outlook, fear, temper, etc. During infancy, brain wiring was done based on the mentality and psychology of the people around you, mainly your parents. If they were thinking underdog, fearful of success/failure, focused on survival, and so on, you’re in a disadvantageous position. Unless you intentionally and proactively rewire your brain when you grow up, you think, behave, decide, and act just like them.
Have you heard people saying you’re just like your dad, mom, or grandpa? The challenge for many of us is that we may consciously want to be the best version of ourselves when we become adults. But, we fail to intentionally rewire our brains and weed out faulty and disempowering beliefs. They are still operating at a subconscious level. They’re more powerful than your conscious thoughts. The critical inner voice that resists and even sabotages your conscious advancement is the expression of the old disempowering beliefs within. You cannot manifest your highest self before dealing with your old brain wiring.
For me, the rewiring process took longer. Partly, I didn’t know the science behind how we think, behave, and act like underdogs, even if we consciously want to be topdogs. I had no idea how my brain wiring was operating in the background, resisting, slowing, and even sabotaging me. You’re lucky! You can shorten the time and effort it takes you to rewire your brain to redefine your destiny.
I've good news if you’re an underdog (a minority) because of your race, ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic status. You can change your status from underdog to topdog in your passion areas. Visit our website dedicated to underdogs like you at www.underdogtotopdog.com and look for the book that will come out soon, showing you how to rewire your brain to redefine your destiny. Stay tuned!
Looking back, part of the reason it took me longer is that I wasn’t successful in exploring at first. I was only exposed to one underdog to a great story (MLK’s story). I didn’t know what to explore and where to begin. I didn’t have enough self-awareness.
It took me years of exploration to figure out who I was, my uniqueness, strengths, limitations, purpose in life, core values, etc. Of course, I haven’t stopped exploring now. I still explore to uncover more insights about my body, mind, and spirit. I also take time to learn more about others, our planet, and the physical, metaphysical, and spiritual universes.
By the way, I’m neither a materialist nor an idealist. Materialists only believe in matter they can perceive with their sense organs and the physical universe alone. Idealists think that matter is not the real deal. The mind and intelligence that created matter are real for the idealists. I join the materialists and believe in matter, and the physical universe since my body lives in it and perceives it using my sense organs. It isn’t an illusion for me like the idealists. I also believe that the mind operates in the metaphysical universe and rules over matter.
Still, we don’t only inhabit these two universes. We’re conscious beings. Every one of us is a soul in a boy with a mind. Consciousness exists in another higher field and rules over mind and matter. Our highest self (soul) operates in the spiritual universe. Stay tuned if you’re interested in learning more about how our different personalities function in these universes and how to tap into your full potential by developing the necessary mindset and competencies! I’m writing a book solely dedicated to this.
Let me stop it here by reminding you that though we should begin our journey toward manifesting our best selves by exploring, it doesn’t end here. I don’t think we will reach the point where we would call it to quit while alive and stop exploring to increase our self-awareness. It’s a lifetime journey. If you’re interested in increasing your self-awareness, check out the first chapter of my book, “Soft Skills That Make or Break Your Success.” You will gain some insights, tools, approaches, and strategies to increase your self-awareness continually.
Have you explored yet? What did you find? Did you discover who you truly are and your purpose in life? What makes you unique? Did you see your destiny in the picture? What are the gifts and talents you were given to serve the world? Have you recognized your strengths and limitations? What blind spots have you uncovered lately? What matters the most to you? What are your non-negotiables? What have you been doing to defend and demonstrate your commitment to the values you discovered that define your purpose and protect your vision?
II. Over sitting on discoveries
Many who explored didn’t take action based on their discoveries. Though wowed by what they found, they sat on their findings for too long.
Expecting their greatness to explode in its own time, they remained inactive. Praying while waiting, they sat on the sidelines as spectators. Though they explored and discovered that they were limitless with a glorious destiny, they kept thinking, saying, and doing things the old ways. They refused to leave their comfort zone and make a quantum leap. Even if they realized that they were unique and meant to pursue a distinct path, they chose to conform with others rather than embrace their distinctiveness and live accordingly.
Even those who stopped doing and began doing certain new things to align with their unique selves and their purpose in life didn’t want to discipline themselves. Hesitating to pay the necessary dues to pursue their greatness, they could not go to the next level. They kept those disempowering habits. They lacked the will or ability to strategize, prioritize, plan, schedule, and protect their priorities. Regardless of being very busy and restless, they stayed the same without advancing in the right direction.
They were also afraid of what others would say and do if they revealed what they were thinking. Fearing rejection, they refrained from talking and acting according to their discoveries. They never realized that they could not mobilize others, find allies, raise capital, and involve the invisible forces outside the physical universe unless they went all in. Because of that, their mission was starved. Regardless of seeing a better future- a glorious destiny, they fell short of taking a chance to enter into a sense of urgency. Thus, they stayed the same.
I didn’t know what to do with my discoveries
I was stunned to discover human potential is unlimited. I was shocked when I came face to face with a glimpse of who I could become. But, I didn’t know what to do with those few discoveries from reading the first two personal development books I got from the teacher I mentioned earlier. I had no clue where to go from there. I didn’t have this model I shared in this book back then. Besides, I didn’t have role models or mentors. As a consequence, I was full of actions with little results. I was everywhere without any results to show!
No doubt. With a new mindset came inspiration and courage. Yes, I enacted based on my discoveries right away. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the insights I’m sharing here in this book. No one in my hometown had walked the path I was supposed to take. As a result, though I went all-in and took lots of action, I wasn’t as successful as I had hoped. There were some disempowering and a few sabotaging habits. I also didn’t know the empowering habits to develop.
I didn’t have long and short-term strategies, plans, priorities, scheduling, and parameters to measure my progress that could have guided me in the right direction at the right pace. Though full of actions, I wasn’t monitoring and evaluating to see which were working and which weren’t. I wasn’t intentional in going out and seeking other people’s feedback. I plowed forward without employing enough critical and strategic thinking.
If I knew what I’m sharing with you now, I’d be in a totally different place, better than where I’m right now. I’d have avoided paying unnecessary prices too. But, the fact that I believed and stepped out to translate the little and incomplete knowledge I had made the difference. My discoveries would have expired if I had not taken action on my partial discoveries. I’d have the same mindset, thought process, and belief system. I’d have thought small, behaved like an underdog, and been satisfied with being average and ordinary. I'd have lost momentum if I waited too long until I got the full picture. If I stayed tight until I gained the complete picture, until all the lights turned green, I’d still be where I was.
I should be a little bolder
Yes, I didn’t act quickly enough on those initial discoveries. I wasn’t effective and paid unnecessary prices. But that was then. It was understandable given the circumstances. I forgave myself. What about these days, you may ask? Do I feel complacent and think that I’m taking bold enough actions?
Not at all! I take responsibility daily. I regularly reflect on the actions I should stop taking and the bold measures I should take at a given moment.
Consciously and on the surface, right now, I’d say I’m enacting based on my discoveries thus far. But, deep inside, I feel like there must be some quantum actions I should have been taking if I desire to experience a quantum leap jump. I should be a little braver if I want to go to the next level. I learned that the bolder actions I take, the higher I climb. The more I have empowering habits and the necessary competencies, the quicker I progress.
Unfortunately, either I’m not yet aware of the actions I should be taking (I may need to explore further), or they may already be on my to-do list, but I’m not giving them the priority, intensity, and resources they deserve. Or, I may need to refine and reinforce some of my habits and also need some stretching by a mentor to take bolder actions. That is why we all should keep learning and scrutinizing our actions. We should also increase our exposure and enact based on our new discoveries immediately. We should also get coaching and mentoring to grow constantly. The more we grow, the braver we become.
Have you taken bold actions? Are you advancing on the continuum of greatness at the initially anticipated speed? How do you measure your progress? What empowering habits have helped you advance on your greatness journey so far? How do you make sure you keep raising your own bar? What systems, models, approaches, tools, strategies, and tactics do you need to advance?
Certainly, one can have some justifiable reasons why they are hesitant to take concrete steps to translate their discoveries into realities. I’ve heard the following excuses over the years, I’m:
· Too young or too old,
· Unprepared to step out this time,
· Not okay to take some risks in this season of my life, and
· Not ready to shoulder the responsibilities that may come with success.
III. Stopped or slowed by resistance and setbacks
Those who overcame one or more of the abovementioned excuses might have continued on this rewarding journey sustaining the momentum until they stopped or slowed down. Many enthusiastic men and women of action are surprised when they meet roadblocks on the road to greatness. They wonder why they’re facing setbacks. They don’t recognize that setbacks are the necessary companions on the path toward greatness. As a result, they mistakenly view resistance as:
· Proof that they don’t worth taking the trip,
· Signal that they aren’t worthy of distinction,
· Sign of wrong moves,
· Wrong timing, or
· Indication of being ill-equipped, so they retreat.
Some might have withstood inconvenient circumstances but failed to stand up to the skeptical people around them. Many individuals who enacted based on their discoveries might have been discouraged by others—even belittled. Some might have attempted to stop them from walking on the road toward their greatness. Consequently, they caved into peer pressure.
My lack of wisdom attracted unnecessary attacks
We shouldn’t always blame others for where we’re in life. We shouldn’t fail to take responsibility by asking what our roles were in facing resistance and opposition. Sometimes, we attract unfair attacks because we lack wisdom and discernment. We share our findings too soon with the wrong people.
I’m guilty of that! I was so naïve. Like Joseph in the Bible, I shared my dreams too soon with the wrong people. The ‘beating’ I received was brutal. It could have made me give up so easily. Somehow, I trusted my discoveries and depended on God. I was willing to let go of those people who didn’t like the new me. I moved on.
They were offended because I ‘thought highly’ of myself. They felt I was disloyal to our culture. It was bewildering for them to witness me questioning the culture that trained us for centuries to believe that our fate is to stay low profile and remain ordinary. They couldn’t comprehend how a little guy like me woke up one day and despised the wisdom of our ancestors, who (both in oral history and in their epigenetics) transferred into us staying average and remaining underdogs for the rest of our lives.
A few people stayed for a while, hoping they could lower my expectations. When they realized that I had changed forever and reached the point of no return, they disavowed me. Within weeks of my discoveries and taking some actions, I found myself lonely and left alone by those who detested how I was thinking, talking, behaving, and acting.
I’m thankful to God, who strengthened me. I didn’t get discouraged. I’m grateful for the endurance I was given to withstand all of those disappointments as an inexperienced young man. Definitely, I take some responsibility for the way I handled resistance. I didn’t have wisdom. I could have saved many of my relationships if I had used some tact. If I had leashed my ego, I could have continued pursuing my passion while maintaining some of the relationships. Again, considering the lack of resources and mentoring, I don’t blame myself and regret what happened back then.
Keep away from people who belittle you
By the way, not all people who oppose and even belittle others are malicious. The majority may not believe that each person on this planet is a candidate for greatness. When they see someone among them, underdog, believing in themselves and their limitless potential, it irritates them, if not consciously, subconsciously. It hurts their egos when they recognize that you believe what they think is impossible. Don’t take it personally.
Go out and find people who tolerate and accept and honor you for who you are. Just heed the advice of one of the great writers, Mark Twain. He advised, “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”
Be like the deaf frog
Someone shared with me a powerful illustration a journalist used. He told the group about a mountain climbing competition among frogs. Those frogs at the bottom of the mountain shouted deafeningly against those frogs climbing fast and higher. Without fail, almost all of them fell from wherever they were and started over except one frog that kept climbing.
This one exceptional frog reached the top of the mountain regardless of the shouting cry from the rest and won the competition. The journalist asked the group: “Why do you think only one frog succeeded in finishing the race?” They answered: “The champion frog neglected the shouting and focused on the task at hand.” They were wrong. The answer was: “The winning frog was deaf.”
The moral of the story is that we have what it takes to pursue and ultimately unleash our greatness. We can climb on the right ladder of greatness until we unchain our greatness to the fullest. The daunting task is whether we are willing, like the deaf frog, to ignore the critical and limiting inner voice and the noises around us as we head toward our glorious destiny.
Paying dues to become the best version of yourself
Yes, on the journey toward greatness, we may attract unnecessary attacks. We may fail to discern whom we should associate with and get beat up.
Sometimes, we are in the wrong crowd, and their belittling shouts may stop or slow us down. Though we could avoid the above if we grow in wisdom and tact, we shouldn’t forget that the journey toward greatness demands high prices. Unfortunately, many are unwilling to pay their dues. Some, regardless of the resistance and shouting cries, persisted. Sadly, many of these got fed up as they experienced continual setbacks. As a result, they bowed out when the going got tough. They weren’t willing to pay the necessary prices. They felt they had already paid too expensively.
If I share all the prices I have been paying to stay in the game, this entire book won’t be enough. At the start of my journey, the resistance I had faced was nothing compared to what I’ve been willing to pass through since then. I took many crazy risks and made some uncomfortable moves to advance my cause. Most of my moves were trial and error because no one from my family, bloodline, village, or even nationally walked on my chosen path. I also didn’t have guidance, such as the roadmap I’m about to share with you.
I stepped on a new path filled with many uncertainties. I didn’t know where the wild animals and quicksand were. Though some of the prices could have been avoided or lessened, many of them were dues I needed to pay to deserve taking this lifetime ride toward becoming the best version of myself. You don’t need to pay unnecessary prices for lack of knowledge and guidance. You can learn from the stories of the great ones from diverse cultures narrated in this book. Use them as role models to shorten your journey and lessen the pain. Though you should avoid needless headaches, you have to develop resilience and comeback power to be willing to pay the necessary dues your greatness demands on the road toward your destiny.
Have you experienced resistance and continual setbacks? How did you react? Have you paid your dues? How can you avoid or mitigate the impacts of going all-in to pursue your passion and serve others with world-class excellence? How do you rate your resilience from 1 to 10? 1 being having weak endurance, 10 being super resilience, unbreakable without a breaking point. If you rated yourself below 7, how can you develop resilience, and where should you start?
IV. Unable to unchain one’s greatness to the fullest
A few marched forward to manifest their greatness by outlasting continual setbacks. Among these few brave souls, unfortunately:
· Some became complacent and settled for less.
· Others compared themselves with others and felt satisfied in contrast to those who achieved less.
· Still, others were in awe of the distance they had come. Therefore, they settled and fell short of stretching themselves to the max.
I’m not here to make a judgment against such brave souls who have come this far. Far from it, who am I to be their judge?! It wasn’t that easy and simple to settle for less than who they were. The reasons also differ from person to person. Remember, these people might have exhausted. But they weren’t lazy or weak or soft. Such people don’t even explore, let alone come this far. Thus, I honor all who have come thus far!
Let me share with you the top three common reasons why many didn’t unchain their highest self to the fullest:
1. Lack of exposure,
2. Absense of transgenerational vision, and
3. Transition appearing destination.
1. Lack of proper exposure
Lack of exposure is the number one enemy many great people fell short of unchaining their greatness to the fullest. Had they known someone arrived at the height they should have reached, they wouldn’t have stopped.
A great example you might have already heard is the 4-minute mile barrier. Until the 25-year medical student Roger Bannister ran a mile within 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds, many before him who could have shattered the record ran below their potential. Since 1954, however, over sixteen hundred athletes have broken the barrier. Why? They were exposed to what Roger and others before them accomplished. I can imagine what Roger and those who broke the record since then were thinking about the previous generation of athletes.
Likewise, the next generations, especially those who evolve spiritually, will look back and wonder why the past generations were so limited in their creativity, innovation, and courage. Most importantly, they would feel ashamed of how we treated other fellow human beings. They would ask with contempt: How did they discriminate against one another based on race and gender, forgetting that we all are conscious beings with equal status? What were they thinking when they were killing one another? And many more questions.
Even within our generation, we ask what was wrong with the previous generations. We despicably ask: “How on earth did they refuse women and Blacks from voting? What were they thinking when they segregated African Americans from White Americans, denying the former from using the same infrastructures the latter were using because of their darker color? And many more questions.
2. Absence of transgenerational vision
The lack of a transgenerational vision was the second reason those who somehow became great could not cross the finish line, raise successors, build institutions, and leave a legacy that outlived them. It could be because they didn’t have a big enough vision that transcended time and space. Or, they had a long-term vision with megascope, which had been chipped away along the way. Either way, they settled very easily for less than a glorious destiny. They lowered their bar and bowed out of the race too soon. Trading early comfort and certainty, they fell short of unchaining their greatness to the fullest.
3. Transition appearing destination
A few came very close to the finish line. Regrettably, they took a detour to take little rest before the last lap. While they were in the rest area, the affairs of life in transit seduced and ultimately choked them. Gradually, they cheated themselves out of their glorious destiny. They did reset the destination point. And thus, they stopped making the final push. They dwelled in the transition, failing to release their full potential by dying empty.
Though I see it clearly, I’m far from the finish line. I’m spending lots of time and resources sharpening the sow at this stage of my life. I’m developing the right mindset, the necessary skill set, and a solid personality and character that will enable me to finish strong. I’m also building institutions, systems, alliances, and successors. I desire to go beyond the finish line, pour out everything deposited in me, and die empty, leaving a legacy that endures.
What about you? Have you arrived at this stage yet? If so, what are some of the things you’re doing to make sure you finish strong?
